Named after the 9th Governor of Ohio, Jeremiah Morrow, Morrow County sits just north of the very heart of Ohio and covers approximately 407 square miles in total surface area. Home to 31,628 residents, Morrow County is also well known for its difficult driving conditions caused by weather conditions and other factors. In fact, the entire central portion of Ohio is particularly well known to be a challenging place for motorists throughout a significant portion of the average year.
This challenge can be clearly seen in the Ohio Department of Public Safety traffic accident and crash statistics, as Morrow County recorded a grand total of 1,004 traffic accidents in 2007, including 10 traffic related fatalities that were the product of 9 separate traffic accidents. 2008 saw a near repeat of these numbers, with a grand total of 1,022 traffic accidents being entered into the Morrow County records, including 5 fatal traffic accidents that took 6 lives.
The most traffic accident prone townships in Morrow County during 2007 were: Bennington with a total of 186 traffic accidents, Franklin with 109, Harmony with 81, Gilead with 73, and North Bloomfield with a total of 72 total traffic accidents on the books. 2008 saw a near repeat of the 2007 statistics and placements for the most traffic accident prone townships in Morrow County: Bennington with a total of 174 total traffic accidents, Franklin with 103, Harmony with 90, Chester with 87, and Gilead with 82 total traffic accidents. It is worth noting that North Bloomfield did not fall off this list by only a few percent, but took a serious plunge to arrive at only 41 total traffic accidents during 2008. That is a major improvement, and far more fitting for a township of 1,866 residents.
Interestingly, Gilead is the most populated township in the entire county, and is home to 5,868 residents. The next closest township in terms of overall population is Cardington with 2,790, and it does not even come close to appearing on the list for either year, though there was a single traffic-related fatality there in 2007 along with a total of 65 accidents reported in the 2007-2008 period. It is the third most populated township in Morrow County, Bennington, which continued to take its spot amongst the most traffic accident prone townships despite having a population of only 2,663. Franklin, with only 1,410 residents, is similarly dangerous when viewed on a per capita basis.
There are no far and away leaders in the alcohol-related traffic accident list provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Instead, it would only be possible to suggest that North Bloomfield, Bennington, Franklin, Harmony, and Lincoln would appear to have problems with motorists and alcohol based on the 2007 and 2008 figures. Thankfully, there are no townships that seem to be featured on the alcohol-related traffic fatality list during both years. In fact, only 4 of the 10 traffic fatalities in 2007 were linked to alcohol, as were 2 of the 6 2008 traffic fatalities.
