Motor Accidents and Diffusion Tenor Imaging

Have you been seriously hurt in a truck or motorcycle accident due to the negligence of someone else? Many of these types of accidents have been shown to result in head and/or neck injuries and often result in long-term brain dysfunction and in the worst situation death. For these cases, you need legal assistance by an experienced motorcycle and truck injury lawyer to determine which party is responsible and therefore liable for the crash. Not just any attorney will do. It is important to contact an injury attorney as soon as possible as the law sets a time limit in which you can pursue a claim for your injuries. Once this time limit is exceeded you will have no way of recovering compensation for your loss.

It is important that the injury attorney you secure works with your medical care and findings. Evidence for your case depends heavily on your medical findings. You want to hire someone who knows how to manage these findings and someone who will guide you through the entire process. A good attorney will make sure that your injuries and medical concerns are well documented and will pay attention to detail. This makes all the difference in the outcome of a Personal injury settlement.

Since motorcycle and truck accidents often involve serious head and neck injuries it is important that you have Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) done. There are many different MRI techniques used but for these types of accidents, when symptoms of brain damage are present, it is important to consider Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) . DTI is a new twist on MRI. DTI is a valid and sensitive way of identifying the impact of axonal injury and well accepted as a form of evidence of brain damage to the legal system. No need to rely on a healthcare provider's interpretation of behavioral loss. The physician might say one thing earlier on and change his/her statement later. This type of image provides excellent proof of the severity of your injury. The DTI image is analyzed by a statistical program based on data collected from clinical trials. Conventional imaging is not sensitive enough to map out this type of damage.

DTI concentrates on viewing of your axonal fiber tracts which are often damaged with accident victims. This technique looks at water movement (water diffusion) in the brain to create an image. Water molecules move differently around axon bundles than they do around neuronal cell bodies. This difference in water flow or diffusion allows you to sort out axon bundles from cell bodies so you can get a good look at the bundles. Axon bundles are referred to as white matter and are long fiber tracts that carry signals to distant parts of the brain. Clinical studies have demonstrated that white matter damage effects cognitive brain function. Cognitive brain function refers to any mental process that involves symbolic functions for example perception, memory, imagery (minds eye) and thinking. What this boils down to is awareness and your ability to interpret information and make decisions.

DTI clinical studies demonstrate that damage to specific axon bundles is associated with certain patterns of cognitive loss. In other words, DTI allows you to see where the damage is whether it is diffuse or in specific areas and allows you to determine ahead of time what brain function will be lost and to what extent. In fact, there are areas in the brain that or more susceptible to physical trauma than others and involve key pathways with well understood function. DTI is also used to view brain damage in patients who have Multiple Sclerosis, Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.
