Located along the eastern edge of the heart of Ohio, Muskingum County is home to roughly 85,000 residents. The county derives its name from a Native American word that could either mean “by the river-side” or “elk’s eye.” The former may be more accurate given the 8 square miles of waterways that cover nearly 1.2% of the entire county’s 673 square mile area. The Ohio Department of Public Safety keeps records of the traffic accidents that occur in the various townships in Muskingum County, which seem to exclude the county seat of Zanesville. This omission means that only 58,999 of the nearly 85,000 residents will be considered in the statistics discussed in this article.
For a county with a moderate population and frequently difficult driving conditions, Muskingum County seems fairly safe for motorists on a statistical basis. Only 1,700 traffic accidents were recorded in Muskingum County during 2007, including 13 fatalities and 526 injuries. 2008 saw a slight decline in overall traffic accidents recorded in Muskingum County, with 1,692 traffic accidents on file, including 7 fatalities and 598 injuries.
The townships that reported the greatest number of overall traffic accidents in Muskingum County during 2007 were: Falls with 314 total traffic accidents on file, Washington with 156, Newton 139, Springfield with 125, Wayne with 118, Perry with 109, and Muskingum with 101 traffic accidents. 2008 saw many of those same townships reprise their status as traffic accident prone townships with the following statistics: Falls with a total of 316 traffic accidents, Newton with 175, Washington with 142, Springfield with 134, Wayne with 118, and Perry with 102 traffic accidents.
The very fact that Washington, home to only 4,284 residents, can rank so highly both years compared to the larger townships of Newton (5,402 residents), and Springfield (5,433) indicates that Washington may be a potential source of danger for motorists in Muskingum County. 2007 also saw another alarming statistic: the Township of Jackson recorded an equal number of traffic-related fatalities as the much larger Township of Falls. With 8,585 residents, the Township of Falls is the largest township that the Ohio Department of Public Safety keeps records on in Muskingum County, and thus it is alarming to see a township with only 2,221 residents prove to be so competitive in terms of fatal traffic accidents. Thankfully, the pair of traffic accidents that occurred in Jackson during 2007 would appear to be anomalies as the town went through 2008 without recording a single traffic-related fatality.
Not surprisingly, two of the medium-sized townships tied for the honor of having the most unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents during 2007: Wayne and Muskingum with two each. Falls took top honors in this category the following year with 5 such incidents, but the Township of Wayne recorded another 2 such instances, and the Township of Muskingum recorded one more. Medium sized townships seem particularly prone to this sort of crime as they are too large for residents to know everyone, yet their law enforcement tends to be spread fairly thin with more critical work to conduct.
