The Ohio Accident Victim’s Guide to Serious Injury: Recognizing Traumatic Brain Injury in Young Children

How do you know if your young child has sustained a serious brain injury?

Although children may have the same symptoms of traumatic brain injury in an adult, they are not able to communicate that they have a headache, feel nauseous, are confused or are experiencing blurred vision and other sensory problems. However, if your child has been in an Ohio car accident, has fallen, or sustained another injury and may have hit his or her head, there are signs you can watch for that may indicate the presence of a head injury.

Signs of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children

• Change in nursing or eating habits
• Persistent crying
• Unusual or easy irritability
• Change in ability to pay attention
• Inability to be consoled
• Change in sleep habits
• Sad or depressed mood
• Loss of interest in favorite toys or activities
• Vomiting
• Slurred speech
• Loss of previously acquired skills
• Any loss of consciousness
• Seizures or convulsions
• Clear fluid draining from the nose or eyes

If you notice any of the listed signs and symptoms in your child, see a doctor right away. Traumatic brain injuries are serious medical emergencies and require medical attention to prevent potentially fatal brain injury complications.

Children who sustain traumatic brain injuries may require long term hospitalization followed by extensive rehabilitation and occupational and/or physical therapy. Some children never completely recover.

If your child has sustained a serious brain injury, your child and your family may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation, therapy, on-going care, your loss of earnings, your child’s loss of earning potential, loss of quality of life and other damages.
