Tire blowouts cause serious injury and accidents on Ohio highways.

A leading cause of Ohio highway truck wrecks and car crashes is tire blowouts. A tire blowout accident occurs when a tire on a car or big rig is so severely damaged that it immediately loses all tire pressure and it causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle. A tire blowout accident may cause serious injury or wrongful death.

What causes tire blowouts?

Potholes
A large cut in the tire that causes rapid air loss
A small puncture in the wheel that allows air to gradually escape
Overloading the vehicle
Tread separation or belt separation on a radial tire
Manufacturer tire defects
Improper tire inflation

Tire blowouts can happen to any driver. The Cleveland personal injury attorneys at Chester Law Group have compiled this list of tips to help you avoid a car accident caused by a tire blowout.

1. Check your tires! Your tires should be properly inflated (check your owner’s manual to find out the correct tire pressure) and should have enough tread to provide good traction. If you can see Abraham Lincoln’s head when you stick a penny head down in the tires grooves, your tires don’t have enough tread and it is time for new tires.

2. Don’t follow too closely. A three to four second following distance will give you time to react to a blowout of the vehicle in front of you or to avoid an accident if your own tires blow out.

3. If your tire does blow, continue at your current rate of speed.

4. Gently counter-steer in the opposite direction of the pulling tire.

5. When the car stabilizes, gradually slow down and pull to the side of the road.
