Slip and Falls Can Lead To Something Far More Serious

This year, over 9 million people in the USA will slip and fall, and their resulting injuries will range from something as minor as a scraped knee to something as major as disfigurement, paralysis or death. All of these incidents will, however, cost a lot of people a lot of money.

Slips and falls can be divided into several categories - including falls by employees in the workplace, falls by people visiting a company's premises and falls by people in areas under the city's control - and each fall or slip has the potential to cost either the public or the private sector thousands of dollars. According to research undertaken by the National Safety Council, the average cost of one person's slip or fall is just over $20,000, and these costs include not only the injured person's medical and / or legal bills but also the losses incurred as a result of the injured person's missing work or successfully suing any relevant negligent party.

Studies undertaken by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that slips and falls account for upwards of 35% of all of the country's work-related injuries, and that, in fact, most injuries suffered while at work are caused by a slip or a fall. The Bureau also determined that the average employee will spend 38 days at home every year recuperating from injuries sustained due to a slip, a trip or a fall, and the National Floor Safety Institute's research has managed to place the overwhelmingly large monetary value of $60 billion on the USA's total annual losses caused by slips and falls.

A study specific to the state of Ohio as recently conducted by the Ohio Department of Health determined that falls at the workplace accounted for approximately 11% of all workplace fatalities for the period 2003 through 2006. Through this study, the Department also ascertained that this 11% equates to, on average, just over 20 deaths per year. Although 11% may not seem like an incredibly large percentage, it should be noted that the study also determined that workplace falls were the second highest cause of death in the office or factory environment.

Rather predictably, the Ohio Department of Health study also determined that the largest number of falls involved males who were working in the construction industry, although working in the transportation field and the repair and maintenance industry was also shown to be hazardous as far as slips, trips and falls were concerned. Industrial premises and factories also proved to be the most dangerous of environments to work in - 41% of all fatal falls occurred in these types of places - although work-related accidents resulting in fatal falls also occurred in farms, public buildings and residences.

Slips and falls are not to be taken lightly, and, as the statistics have made it clear that the odds of a person being injured in such an incident are extremely high, it is recommended that everyone constantly be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations.
