Ottawa County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics

Located along the northern edge of Ohio, and occupying several islands throughout Lake Erie, Ottawa County is one of the few counties in the entire country that is comprised of more water surface are than it is land surface area. Of the 40,985 residents that are registered in Ottawa County, only 34,954 live in the various townships that are located throughout that county. It is also worth noting that the county may take its name from the Ottawa tribe or a Native American word for barterer/trader.

The fact that Ottawa County is home to numerous islands that contain smaller population centers makes the county unique not only from a cultural point of view, but also from other perspectives as well. For example, a small township such as Put-In-Bay that is isolated on its own island is unlikely to ever experience a significant number of unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents because there is simply nowhere to run and everyone knows everyone else in a township of only 763.

Overall, Ottawa County does record a slightly low number of traffic accidents for a county with nearly 35,000 residents. This might be due to the aforementioned fact that island-townships account for a reasonable portion of the overall population of Ottawa County. Regardless of the reasons, only 847 total traffic accidents went on the official Ottawa County record books in 2007, along with a single traffic-related fatality. 2008 saw a total of 791 total traffic accidents go on the books in Ottawa County, but a serious spike in traffic-related fatalities was also recorded with 8 people losing their lives on the roads of Ottawa County that year.

The townships that reported the greatest number of overall traffic accidents in Ottawa County during 2007 were: Danbury with 148 total traffic accidents, Portage with 103, Clay with 78, Benton with 77, and Bay with 76 total traffic accidents. 2008 saw some very similar statistics according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety: Portage with a total of 129 traffic accidents, Harris with 105, Danbury with 97, and Salem with 71 total traffic accidents. Some of the townships in Ottawa County seem to experience significant year to year changes in the overall number of traffic accidents, especially when the accident rates are compared on a per capita basis.

For example, the Township of Danbury is home to 4,631 residents, and thus a decline of over a third on a year for year basis is noteworthy. Had the same change happened to a smaller township, it would be easy to write it off as the result of a statistical anomaly due to a low data set, but even the most populated township in the county is also subject to these wild fluctuations. The most populated township in Ottawa County is Salem, with 5,517 residents. With only 63 total traffic accidents on file during 2007, Salem appeared fairly safe until 2008 when that statistic jumped to 71 total traffic accidents. The fact that most townships in the county seem to experience 10% or greater changes in overall traffic accidents on a year to year basis is troublesome and makes suggesting a safe haven for motorists in Ottawa County a difficult challenge.
