Located north of the heart of Ohio and just south of Lake Erie, Richland County draws its name from the rich soil found in the region. Of the 128,852 residents living in the county, the Ohio Department of Public Safety only keeps records on 79,506 as they relate to Richland County. The rest of the residents reside in one or more of the local metro/metropolitan areas that are considered to be places of interest within Richland County.
With a grand total of 1,824 traffic accidents on file during 2007, and another 2,045 in record during 2008, Richland County is far from the safest place for motorists in Ohio. In fact, 9 people lost their lives on the roads of Richland County during 2007, and another 10 died as a result of 6 separate traffic accidents during 2008.
The townships in Richland County that reported the most overall traffic accidents during 2007 were: Madison with 314 total traffic accidents on file, Washington with 311, Mifflin with 202, Springfield with 197, and Jefferson with 117. 2008 saw an explosion of overall traffic accidents: Madison with a total of 370 traffic accidents, Washington with 356, Mifflin with 229, Springfield with 220, Jefferson with 126, and the Township of Troy 125.
The fact that the Township of Madison sits atop the total traffic accident list in Richland County two years running is not surprising given that fact that it is the most populous township in Richland County with 14,680 residents. What is surprising is the fact that the Township of Washington is surprisingly close to the Township of Madison when it comes to the number of traffic accidents despite being home to 6,777 residents. With comparable total crash statistics and roughly half the population, the Township of Washington is a particularly dangerous place for motorists visiting Richland County.
Springfield is home to 9,720 residents and thus it is actually safer on a per capita basis than the much larger Township of Madison. The Township of Mifflin is comparably dangerous when measured on a per capita basis, and overall the aforementioned towns are all worth avoiding whenever possible.
The Township of Madison has a few other statistics worth looking at closely, but neither are particularly unexpected. The first is the fact that 4 motorists died in the Township of Madison during 2007, as did one more during 2008. This puts the Township atop the most fatal place for motorists during 2007, but the much smaller Township of Monroe took that dubious honor in 2008 with a single traffic accident that resulted in 5 tragic deaths. The incident in the Township of Monroe was linked directly to alcohol, and should be viewed as a statistical anomaly rather than a repeatable fact.
The next fact that makes the Township of Madison unique is that it has a very small number of unexplained and/or un-attributable traffic accidents. Most townships of around 10,000 residents pass a point where their local law enforcement is capable of dealing with such matters, but 4 unexplained and/or un-attributable traffic accidents were recorded in the Township of Madison during 2007 and another 4 in 2008.
