Ross County is located just south of the very heart of Ohio, and covers 693 square miles of total surface area. Of those 693 square miles, approximately 5 are covered in water during most of the year. Ross County is named after Senator James Ross, who negotiated a deal with the rebels during the Whiskey Rebellion. 73,345 people call Ross County home, and the official county seat is listed as Chillicothe.
Ross County is slightly on the dangerous side of the statistical curve according to data provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. In 2007, there were a grand total of 1,794 traffic accidents reported in Ross County, 10 of which proved fatal to a total of 11 commuters. The 2008 statistics issued by the Ohio Department of Public Safety indicate another 1,743 traffic accidents occurred, including 13 serious traffic accidents that took 19 lives in total.
The Township of Scioto is home to 27,735 residents, which means that it is also the logical choice to expect the most traffic accidents each and every year within Ross County. This turns out to be the case in 2007, as the following townships reported the following number of traffic accidents during 2007: Scioto with a total of 412 traffic accidents, Union with 227, Green with 183, Huntington with 178, Concord with 135, Liberty with 113, Springfield with 108, and Twin with 101 total traffic accidents. 2008 saw a very similar picture painting of almost each township: Scioto with 376 total traffic accidents, Union with 234, Huntington with 193, Green with 162, Concord with 126, Springfield with 118, and Liberty with a total of 110 traffic accidents on record. The Township of Twin narrowly avoided being included on the triple-digit accident list during 2008 with 98 total traffic accidents on file, a feat that is still impressive considering the fact that only 3,146 residents reside within the particular township.
The appearance of a comparatively small township such as Twin is not a coincidence, nor is it an isolated incident. In fact, there are many townships in Ross County that have a comparatively high number of traffic accidents when viewed on a per capita basis. For example, the Township of Green is home to only 6,018 people, yet it recorded an average of 172.5 traffic accidents during 2007 and 2008. If total traffic accidents scaled linearly with population, then the Township of Green would experience just under 800 traffic accidents per year if it were the size of Scioto.
Sadly, there appear to be no townships worth singling out in Ross County for their overall safety records. If anything, the Township of Huntington deserves additional attention for the fact that it was home to the most alcohol-related traffic accidents two years running, though it did tie with the much larger Township of Scioto in 2008 for that dubious honor. With 16 total traffic accidents being linked to alcohol in 2008, and a stunning 21 on file during 2007, Huntington is far from being the safest place for motorists in Ross County. Thankfully, 2008 passed without the Township of Huntington recording even a single fatal traffic accident linked to alcohol, though 2007 was not such a fortunate year.
