There are a few different theories as to the origin of the word Sandusky, though most of the theories revolve around a slurred translation of a Native American word that relates to water in one way or another. Regardless of how Sandusky County got its name, the township is home to 61,792 residents, approximately a third of which live in the Fremont Micropolitan statistical area. The remaining 39,462 residents are listed by the Ohio Department of Public Safety as residents of the townships in the northern Ohio and its various islands located in the southern reaches of Lake Erie.
Despite the relatively modest population, Sandusky County is home to an unusually high number of overall traffic accidents. In 2007, Sandusky County recorded a grand total of 1,190 traffic accidents and 9 traffic-related fatalities. In 2008, Sandusky County recorded 1,219 total traffic accidents and another 9 traffic-related fatalities that were the result of 6 unique traffic accidents. These figures are high for a county with a sub 40,000 population, especially considering some of the smaller isolated population centers on the islands of Sandusky County.
The townships in Sandusky County that experienced the greatest number of overall traffic accidents during 2007 were: Sandusky with a total of 213 traffic accidents on file, Riley with 156, Washington with 151, Woodville with 109, Green Creek with 106, and Ballville with 102 file. Things seemed much the same during 2008, with the Ohio Department of Public Safety reporting the following townships as the most prone to experience traffic accidents: Sandusky (the township) with 223 total traffic accidents on record, Green Creek with 146, Washington with 143, Ballville with 139, Riley with 121, and Townsend with 101 total traffic accidents on file. The names and places have changed a little bit in the year to year rankings, but only Woodville managed to excuse itself from the three digit list of overall traffic accidents during 2008, and only barely with 96 accidents on file.
It would be logical to assume that the largest township in Sandusky County, home to 9,527 residents, would be on top of the list two years running. Oddly enough, the Township of Sandusky is not that town, as it only has 4,087 residents. The township in Sandusky County that has a population of 9,527 is none other than Green Creek. Green Creek actually has a modest number of overall traffic accidents compared to Sandusky, which would have roughly four times the number of incidents if its population were scaled to equal that of Green Creek.
Worse yet, the Township of Washington is home to only 2,396 residents, and Riley is home to just 1,302. These figures paint pictures of townships that are very dangerous for motorists. The alcohol-related traffic accidents in particular seem to point at Townsend during 2007, as that small township of only 1,670 generated 11 alcohol-related traffic accidents. In 2008, Townsend had a more reasonable total of only 7 alcohol-related traffic accidents, and no longer led the county. Instead, Green Creek led the county with 14 total alcohol related traffic accidents in 2008, followed closely by Sandusky with 12, and Bellville with 10 alcohol-related traffic accidents.
