Seneca County takes its name from the Seneca group of Native Americans, and covers 552 square miles in north-central Ohio. Located just south of Lake Erie, Seneca County is home to 58,863 residents, though only 29,885 residents are counted by the Ohio Department of Public Safety as residents of the county proper. Everyone else lives in one of the larger cities in the region such as the county seat of Tiffin.
Seneca County’s low population makes it difficult to discuss the traffic-crash related statistics without the context of multiple years. After all, smaller data sets are innately prone to being easily skewed. The crash statistics provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety do paint and interesting picture of Seneca County and a few of the townships within, though most of those townships are in the 1,000 to 3,000 resident range and are thus prone to statistical anomalies. That being said, a grand total of 799 traffic accidents were reported in Seneca County during 2007, and another 867 were reported during 2008. A near-10% increase year to year certainly seems worthy of further investigation, but the overall number of traffic-related fatalities were cut almost in half during the same time; Seneca County recorded 13 traffic-related fatalities as the product of 10 fatal traffic accidents during 2007, and 6 fatal traffic accidents killed an equal number of people (6) the following year.
The Township of Clinton is the most populated township in Seneca County, with 4,188 residents. Thus, it is no surprise that Clinton topped the countywide total traffic statistics in 2007 with 114 total traffic accidents on record. Other townships in Seneca County that experienced a high number of total traffic accidents during 2007 were: Hopewell with a total of 97 traffic accidents, Eden with 87, Pleasant with 65, and Adams with 52 total traffic accidents. 2008 saw a near repeat of these statistics, though the overall number of traffic accidents in the county increased: Hopewell took the lead in overall traffic crashes with 136 on file, Clinton followed with 116, Eden with 86, Jackson with 60, and Pleasant recorded 56 total traffic accidents.
The fact that Hopewell is home to only 2,874 people is certainly a bad sign since the township seems to be competitive with the much larger Clinton. In short, the Township of Hopewell would appear to be one of the most dangerous places for motorists in Seneca County when viewed on a per capita basis, though Eden also seems competitive as it is home to only 2,020 residents. Eden was surprisingly dry during 2007, with only 3 alcohol-linked traffic accidents on file compared to the 8 Hopewell recorded in the same period. The Township of Hopewell actually took the dubious honor of matching the Township of Clinton for the top spot on the total alcohol-related traffic crash list in 2008.
The Township of Liberty seems to be a particularly safe township in Seneca County when viewed on a per capita basis. With only 34 traffic accidents on file in 2007 and 43 during 2008, the township of 2,340 is something of a safe haven for motorists in Seneca County.
