Named after Revolutionary War and War of 1812 hero and statesman Isaac Shelby, Shelby County is located in western Ohio. Home to 47,910 residents, Shelby County sprawls out over 411 square miles in a location that is not necessarily motorist-friendly 365 days a year. Despite this, the Ohio Department of Public Safety actually lists Shelby County as a very safe place for motorists. In fact, there were only 877 traffic accidents reported in 2007, and another 902 traffic accidents reported in 2008.
These statistics are actually quite impressive for a population of just under 48,000, especially considering the fact that Ohio is frequently subjected to inclement weather and other difficult driving conditions. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that 2007 passed without a single traffic-related fatality reported in Shelby County, though there were a trio of traffic-related deaths linked to three separate traffic accidents in 2008.
The townships that led the 2007 Ohio Department of Public Safety total traffic accident list in Shelby County were: Franklin with 129 total traffic accidents, Clinton with 110, Washington with 94, Dinsmore with 75, and Orange and Salem in a tie with 73 traffic accidents each. 2008 saw a few shakeups in the list as well as a few new townships: Franklin with 118 traffic accidents, Washington with 92, Clinton with 86, Dinsmore with 85, Orange with 75, Salem with 74, and Cynthian with 72 total traffic accidents on record.
What is immediately interesting here is the fact that Clinton does not top the list of dangerous townships in Shelby County despite being far and away the most populated, with 20,903 residents. Compare this to the 2,842 residents that reside in the Township of Franklin, and it is simple to see that there are dangerous and safe townships for motorists in Shelby County.
Fortunately, there seem to be no consistently fatal places in Shelby County for motorists, as the three fatal traffic accidents in 2008 all happened in different townships. It is probably worth noting that none of the fatal traffic accidents in 2008 occurred in Clinton, but it may not be surprising that one such incident was on the books of the Township of Franklin. Without further cohobating evidence in the form of additional fatalities recorded during 2007, it might be premature to declare the Township of Franklin a deadly place for motorists.
Also worth noting is the fact that none of the fatal traffic accidents Shelby County experienced during 2008 were linked to alcohol. In fact, only 40 overall traffic accidents during 2008 were linked to alcohol, with the small Township of Salem taking the lead with 6 overall incidents. For a township with only 2,231 residents, this might seem alarming at first glance but the fact of the matter is that many townships recorded 4 or 5 alcohol-related traffic accidents during 2008. The small population of the townships in Shelby County makes drawing meaningful conclusions from these numbers almost impossible, but it is worth noting that Clinton only reported 5 alcohol-linked traffic accidents in 2008 in addition to the 3 reported in 2007. Overall, these statistics only serve to reinforce the idea that the Township of Clinton is a particularly safe township in Shelby County.
