Traumatic Brain Injury Linked to Long Term Medical Problems

Not only can a traumatic brain injury lead to numerous disabilities, but sometimes this type of injury can also lead to medical conditions in the future. For instance, Alzheimer's disease, dementia and Parkinson's disease have all been linked to earlier brain injury.

Alzheimer's Disease
Sustaining a head injury in early adulthood has been linked to increasing one's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life. Researchers have found evidence that shows that a brain injury may actually trigger Alzheimer's in some cases. Researchers have also theorized that a head injury can bring on the disease more quickly for those who are already at risk. Alzheimer's disease gets worse over time and is marked by impaired cognitive functioning, memory loss and dementia.

Dementia
Medical experts have identified two types of dementia linked to traumatic brain injuries; dementia pugilistica and posttraumatic dementia. Dementia pugilistica is caused by receiving numerous blows to the head. Posttraumatic dementia is the result of a severe traumatic brain injury and usually results in long term memory problems.

Parkinson's Disease
Traumatic brain injuries can even result in the later development of motor problems, including Parkinson's disease. This disease may reveal itself years after suffering a head injury usually as the result of damage to the basal ganglia. Victims of Parkinson's disease may experience tremors, slow movement, stiffness and an inability to move.

If you or a loved one has sustained a brain injury from a car accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident or any other negligent conduct you may be entitled to compensation.
