Named after former Governor of Connecticut and a land owner in the same 635 square mile land mass that makes the county, Trumbull County is located along border of Ohio/Pennsylvania border just south of Lake Erie. The U.S. Census Report lists the population of Trumbull County as 225,116, but the Ohio Department of Public Safety only lists 164,151 as residents of the various townships located throughout the county. The Township of Warren is listed as the county seat of Trumbull County, though it is not the most populated township if one looks only at Trumbull County residents. That partic3ular honor would go to the Township of Weathersfield with 27,717 residents.
During 2007, Trumbull County recorded a grand total of 3,287 traffic accidents and 17 traffic-related fatalities that were the product of 16 unique accidents. 2008 saw a significant increase in these statistics, with a grand total of 3,443 traffic accidents on record, including 20 fatal traffic accidents that took the lives of 20 people. Overall, these statistics paint the picture of a county that is a moderately dangerous for motorists, but not exceedingly so.
According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the most dangerous townships in Trumbull County for motorists during 2007 were: Howland with a total of 662 traffic accidents, Liberty with 376, Weathersfield with 259, and 242 traffic accidents for both Bazetta and Champion. The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s records show a very similar trend the following year: Howland with a total of 656 traffic accidents, Liberty with 403, Weathersfield with 278, Champion with 257, and Bazetta with 225 traffic accidents.
The fact that the Township of Howland is home to 19,541 residents yet tops the list of traffic accident prone townships in Trumbull County marks Howland as a particularly dangerous place for motorists in Trumbull County. Of course, Bazetta may be even more dangerous when viewed on a per capita basis, as it is home to just 6,306 residents. Compare this to the 9,762 residents that live in the Township of Champion, and the overall traffic accidents per capita paint the picture of a town with a modest amount of traffic accidents per capita and a significantly more dangerous township.
It may also be no coincidence that the Township of Howland led the county in alcohol-related traffic accidents in Trumbull County with a total of 27. Weathersfield was a close second with 24 and Bazetta came in a distant third with 20. The only difference between Bazetta and the other two townships is the fact that Bazetta recorded a pair of alcohol-linked traffic fatalities during the same period versus a grand total of zero for Weathersfield and Howland.
Fortunately, Bazetta went the entire following year with only 12 alcohol-related traffic accidents and no alcohol-linked traffic fatalities, though Howland had a pair of alcohol-linked traffic fatalities and 39 total traffic accidents linked to alcohol. Warren took the number 2 spot on this particularly dubious list with 26 traffic accidents and a single traffic fatality being linked to alcohol, while Weathersfield resumed its number 3 spot with 23 traffic accidents and a single fatality being linked to alcohol in 2008.
