Like many of the counties in Ohio, Tuscarawas County takes its name from an Indian word of debated meaning. The two most common translations would be from the Delaware Indian language and would translate to either ‘old town’ or ‘open mouth.’ While the U.S. Census Report of 2000 listed the official population of Tuscarawas County as 90,914, the Ohio Department of Public Safety records show only 61,648 residents of the 571 square mile county located just east of the heart of Ohio. This discrepancy may be due to the fact that the Ohio Department of Public Safety records micropolitan and metropolitan areas as unique for reporting purposes.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, it would be reasonable to assume that Tuscarawas County would be home to a great number of traffic accidents. According to data provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, a total of 1,636 traffic accidents were recorded in Tuscarawas County during 2007. 2008 saw a total of 1,652 traffic accidents go on the books of Tuscarawas County, which shows a surprising year to year stability. Even the total number of traffic-related fatalities recorded in Tuscarawas County remained nearly the same, with 11 reported during 2007 and 10 the following year.
The townships that reported the highest number of overall traffic accidents in Tuscarawas County during 2007 were: Goshen with 270 traffic accidents on record, Dover with 269, Mill with 128, Lawrence with 124, and Franklin with 115 traffic accidents on the books. 2008 saw only a few changes to the ranks of the most dangerous townships in Tuscarawas County: Dover with a total of 252 traffic accidents on file, Goshen with 248, Mill with 133, Lawrence with 127, and Franklin with 117 total traffic accidents on file.
The Township of Mill is home to 10,290 residents, which is more than any other township in Tuscarawas County. Despite this, the Township of Mill placed third for overall traffic accidents during 2007 and again during 2008, while Dover and Goshen took the top spots. The Township of Dover is home to only 4,726 residents and Goshen is home to only 5,285 residents. While Dover and Goshen have roughly half the population of the Township of Mill, they both routinely report approximately twice the overall traffic accidents. This combination of facts marks the Township of Mill as a relatively safe place for motorists in Tuscarawas County, while simultaneously marking both Goshen and Dover as particularly dangerous places for motorists.
The Township of Dover is also interesting in that is was home to the most unknown and/or unexplained traffic accidents during both 2007 and 2008. With 4 such incidents on record in 2007, and another 6 in 2008, Dover seems particularly prone to unexplained traffic accidents. The fact that the statistics across the county seem remarkably stable probably speaks to a problem with insufficient law enforcement coverage and/or funding. It may also not be a coincidence that the Township of Dover recorded a countywide record number of alcohol-related traffic accidents during both years, with 21 in 2007 and another 26 during 2008.
