Formed from the union of surrounding counties, Union County takes its name from the method of its formation as much as it serves as an honorary reference to the much larger union in which Ohio is a part. Located in the northwest corner of the heart of Ohio, Union County is home to 40,909 residents. Spanning 437 square miles in the heart of a state known for its inclement weather, Union County records Marysville as its county seat and its most populated city.
Despite the adverse driving conditions, Union County reported only 843 traffic accidents during 2007, and another 898 the following year. While these statistics are very reasonable for a county with barely 40,000 residents, the traffic fatality figures are a little less reasonable with 7 traffic accidents in 2007 resulting in 7 lives lost and another 5 traffic-related fatalities being the direct result of 5 unique traffic accidents the following year.
The townships that reported the most traffic accidents in Union County during 2007 were: Jerome with 171 traffic accidents on file, Allen with 138, Paris with 117, and Darby with 65 traffic accidents on record. 2008 saw some of the same townships reprise their roles as traffic-accident prone townships in Union County: Jerome with a total of 168 traffic accidents on file, Allen with 150, and Paris with 101.
There are some interesting facts to be aware of when viewing these statistics, namely the fact that Paris is home to 17,549 residents yet places third in both lists. The Township of Jerome is home to only 3,950 people, which marks it as a very dangerous township for motorists in Union County when viewed on a per capita basis. If the Township of Jerome were to be scaled to the population of the Township of Paris, it would experience approximately 753 traffic accidents each year. This does assume that traffic accidents scale linearly with population, which is not necessarily true.
The Township if Paris experienced two traffic-related fatalities during 2007, as did the Township of Union. The Township of Darby reported 2 traffic-related fatalities during 2008, and no other township reported multiple traffic fatalities during 2007 or 2008. This means that while there are some traffic-accident prone townships in Union County, there are no traffic-fatality prone townships in Union County.
It is also worth noting that only 3 of the 7 traffic-related fatalities Union County experienced during 2007 were linked to alcohol, one in the Township of Jerome, another in the Township of Union, and the last in the Township of Dover. 2008 again saw a trio of unique alcohol-linked traffic fatalities, one in the Township of Darby, and two in the Township of Paris. With half of the traffic-related fatalities during 2007 and 2008 being linked to alcohol, it might seem safe to assume that Union County has a slight drinking problem. The fact is that the data set is probably too small to draw any significant conclusions from, despite the consistency of the numbers. Looking at data from more years would reveal whether or not Union County’s drinking problem is as serious as it might seem from the 2007 and 2008 statistics.
