Located along the western edge of Ohio, Van Wert County is named after Isaac Van Wart, a person of interest from the American Revolutionary War. The change in the vowel in Wart/Wert is the subject of much debate, and it may simply be the result of an oral tradition in a time when the average citizen did not know how to read and write. This theory holds some weight with experts, as Van Wert County was founded in 1820, long before public schools were well-organized. With a population of 29,659, the 410 square mile county borders Indiana and is also home to some very adverse driving conditions throughout a significant portion of the average year.
The comparatively low population of Van Wert County makes drawing any conclusions from the statistics provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety somewhat problematic. Instead, it would be advisable to look at the trends that form by looking at the statistics from multiple years, in this case 2007 and 2008. For example, there were 446 traffic accidents recorded in Van Wert County during 2007 and another 461 the following year. These statistics seem reasonably stable, as do the pair of traffic-related fatalities during each year.
The townships in Van Wert County that reported the greatest number of traffic accidents during 2007 were: Pleasant with 109 total traffic accidents on file, Ridge with 53, Washington with 51, Tully with 49, and Liberty with 48 total traffic accidents. 2008 saw a few changes to these statistics, but there was a marked decrease in townships with a high overall rate of traffic accidents: Pleasant with 98, Ridge with 60, Washington with 58, and Willshire with 39 total traffic accidents on record.
It is no surprise that the Township of Pleasant dominates the traffic-accident prone list two years running as the township has 11.120 residents, over twice that of the nearest township. This marks the Township of Pleasant as a relatively safe place for motorists in Van Wert County despite the high overall number of traffic accidents reported there. The Township of Ridge is home to only 3,114 residents, but yet appears to be competitive with the much larger Township of Pleasant. This marks the Township of Ridge as a particularly dangerous place for motorists in Van Wert County.
The Township of Jennings also distinguished itself in a dubious manner, being the only township in Van Wert County to experience an alcohol-related traffic fatality during 2007 or 2008. The fact that only a single life was lost on the roads of Van Wert County due to alcohol over the course of two years is impressive, and thus Jennings, with 695 residents, should not be considered a dangerous destination for motorists in Van Wert County. In fact, the roads of Van Wert County seem to be quite safe from a traffic-fatality standpoint. Only Hoaglin and Union reported traffic-related fatalities in 2007, with one each. The Township of Jennings managed to account for both of the 2008 traffic fatalities, though only one of which was linked to alcohol.
