Named in honor of President George Washington, Washington County occupies 640 square miles along Ohio’s border with West Virginia. Listing Marietta as its most populated township and its county seat, Washington County is home to 63,251 people. Of those 63,251 residents, the Ohio Department of Public Safety lists only 42,076 as actual county residents not residing in unique metropolitan or micropolitan area.
Despite the fact that Ohio offers drivers difficult challenges during a significant portion of the average year, Washington County is actually fairly safe according to the records provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. With only 890 traffic accidents on file in 2007, and another 893 in 2008, Washington County is actually very safe. Add to this the fact that only 4 people lost their lives on the roads of Washington County, and only 7 the following year, and it is easy to view the county as a very safe place for motorists.
Despite this fact, there are still a few townships that stand out as magnets for overall traffic accidents. In 2007, the townships in Washington County that experienced the greatest number of overall traffic accidents were: Marietta with 120 traffic accidents, Muskingum with 98, Warren with 97, and Belpre with a total of 78 traffic accidents on the books. 2008 saw some significant changes to the rankings, which may be a sign that the overall population of just over 42,000 is not sufficient to produce repeatable and/or reliable results. Regardless, those figures for 2008 are: Marietta with 122, Warren with 95, Belpre with 92, and Muskingum with 84 traffic accidents.
Given the fact that the Township of Muskingum and the Township of Marietta have comparable populations (4,673 vs. 4,627), it would be reasonable to expect a similar number of overall traffic accidents. This does assume that traffic accidents generally scale with population, but that is not always the case as the differences between the figures reported by the two townships demonstrates.
It is also interesting to note that none of the townships in Washington County reported multiple traffic fatalities during 2007, and only Muskingum recorded multiple traffic-related fatalities during 2008 with a pair of deaths resulting in a single crash. Fortunately, none of the traffic accidents in the township of Muskingum during 2008 were linked to alcohol. In fact, only 74 traffic accidents and 2 traffic-related fatalities were successfully linked to alcohol during 2008. This might seem like an impressive set of statistics, though it is a rather dramatic departure from the 57 alcohol-linked traffic accidents reported the prior year, though it is an improvement over the 3 alcohol-linked traffic fatalities recording during 2007.
Belpre is also an interesting locating in Washington County because of it was on top of the unknown/un-attributable traffic accident list during both 2007 and 2008 with 3 such incidents on record each year. It is not surprising that Belpre is home to unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents as its population of 4,192 makes it a prime place for such incidents. Instead, it is noteworthy that there are not more unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents on record in Washington County given the number of townships of modest size.
