Named after General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, who turned statesman latter in his life, Wayne County occupies 556 square miles northeast of the very heart of Ohio. The 2000 U.S. Census Report lists the population of Wayne County as 111,564, as well as the fact that Wooster is the both the county seat and the most populated township in the limits of Wayne County. The Ohio Department of Public Safety lists the number of residents residing within Wayne County as 88,742, probably due to the fact that the Ohio Department of Public Safety counts larger population centers as unique for the purposes of reporting.
Despite the adverse driving conditions that Ohio presents its residents and travelers with, Wayne County is surprisingly safe on a per capita basis. During 2007, only 1,446 traffic accidents were reported in all of Wayne County. These numbers did change significantly in 2008, when they reached 1,630, but there may be a number of possible explanations for this particular increase in overall traffic accidents. Another slight increase in traffic-related statistics in the same timeframe involved fatal traffic accidents. In 2007, a total of 12 unique traffic accidents killed 13 people while in 2008 13 unique traffic accidents resulted in 15 fatalities.
The townships that reported the highest overall number of traffic accidents during 2007 were: Chippewa with 155 total traffic accidents, Wooster with 109, Green with 122, East Union with 109, Congress with 106, and Plain with a total of 100 traffic accidents. As previously noted, 2008 as a significantly more dangerous year on the roads of Wayne County than 2007, and the numbers attached the most dangerous townships for motorists in Wayne County certainly back that up: Chippewa with a total of 176 traffic accidents, Wooster with 159, Wayne with 146, Green with 144, Congress and East union with 136 each, and Plain with 102 traffic accidents.
Some interesting facts can be revealed simply by looking at the populations of some of these townships. For example, the Township of Chippewa is home to 10,085 people, which makes it an obvious choice for the township with the greatest overall number of traffic accidents. That being said, the Township of Congress is home to only 4,435 and yet records roughly two thirds the number of traffic accidents that the Township of Chippewa does despite being home to far less than half as many people. This certainly suggested that the Township of Congress is a dangerous place for motorists in Wayne County.
Add to this the fact that Congress recorded 2 traffic related deaths in 2007, a tie for the most in the entire county with Chester (population 2,845), Chippewa, and Milton (population 9,254). Green (population 12,194) and Canaan (population 4,736) tied for this particularly dubious honor during 2008 with three traffic related fatalities each, while the Township of Congress only recorded a single traffic accident during that year. Overall, the fact that no townships report consistently high traffic related fatalities indicates that these year to year statistics are the product of an insufficient data set.
