Cincinnati 9-year-old in coma, faces surgery after dog bite attack

A 9-year-old Ohio boy is recovering from serious injuries after he was allegedly viciously attacked by two dogs last weekend.

Mason McNary remains in a medically-induced coma at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati after being attacked by two American Bulldogs while playing in Miami Township on Saturday, May 8.

Mason and his father were house-sitting for the dogs’ owners. The boy had known the dogs since they were puppies and they had often played together.

Mason’s ear was ripped off. He sustained deep bite marks on his neck and back, and most of the muscles in his left leg were shredded. Mason will undergo reconstructive and plastic surgery and will undergo physical therapy for at least a year.

The dogs were seized and taken to the Clermont County Humane Society.

Each year about 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs. About 885,000 dog bite victims require medical attention and 31,000 require reconstructive surgery for their dog bite injuries. Dog bite victims are often left with traumatic memories that may outlast their physical injuries.

Like Mason, most dog bite victims are children, especially boys, between the ages of five and nine.
