Father of three dies in 176, I-480 crash. Who’s at fault?

Two young men were killed and a woman was injured in a deadly, April 17 car crash. Now the family of one victim is questioning if the death could have been prevented.

The accident took place around 5:00 a.m. on SR-176 at the I-480 west bound ramp. Darryl Mayes, a 23-year-old father of three, and his friend, 22-year-old Christopher Wiktorowski, were killed at the scene. Wiktorowski’s fiancé, 19-year-old Ashley Placek was injured.

The accident occurred after Wiktorowski attempted to merge onto I-480 and lost control of the Dodge Durango he was driving. The SUV flipped over a guard rail and rolled down a hill before coming to a stop on the Brook Park Road exit ramp.

Both men were thrown from the vehicle. Placek, the only one wearing a seatbelt, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for treatment of her injuries.

The family says that Mayes had been intoxicated and picked up by the police to wait for a ride home. They believe that leaving Mayes without a ride led to his death. Investigators will not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash until the autopsies are completed.
