GlaxoSmithKline to pay billions in dangerous drug lawsuit settlements

GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to pay more than $1 billion dollars to settle more than 800 of Paxil birth defect lawsuits.  Parents claim that use of the antidepressant during pregnancy caused persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) and other problems for their babies.
 
Paxil (or paroxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescribed to treat depression. It is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States, with just under $1 billion in sales each year.
 
In 2005, the American Food and drug Administration issued an alert about the risk of birth defects from Paxil after studies showed the drug increased the risk of the heart defects when taken during the first trimester of pregnancy.  The FDA required GlaxoSmithKline to update the warning label to include information about the possible risk of birth defects from Paxil.
 
In October 2009, a Philadelphia jury awarded $2.5 million in compensatory damages to the family of a child born with three heart defects. This case is one of the nearly 200 dangerous drug lawsuits settled by GlaxoSmithKline.
 
GlaxoSmithKline is also preparing to settle 10,000 of about 13,000 Avandia serious injury lawsuits. Victims claim the diabetes drug Avandia caused cardiovascular problems.
