Millions of cribs recalled. Does this recall affect Akron parents?

Pottery Barn Kids voluntarily recalled about 82,000 drop-side cribs yesterday; it is the twelfth manufacturer to issue a recall. Other companies recalling cribs include Child Craft, Delta, Evenflo, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby, Simmons, and StorkCraft. All together, more than seven million cribs have been recalled. Even if your crib has a different manufacturer, it is important for parents to know that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission considers all drop-side cribs dangerous and is proposing a ban on all drop-side cribs.

In the past ten years, the CPSC has received reports of 32 infant and toddler suffocation and strangulation deaths and hundreds of incidents and injuries caused by or related to drop-side detachments in drop-side cribs made by various manufacturers. When the cribs' drop-sides detach, they can create a space in which a child can become trapped leading to suffocation. The CPSC received an additional 14 reports of infant fatalities due to entrapment in cribs that may be related to a drop side.

Pottery Barn Kids’ recall comes after 36 reports of drop sides malfunctioning or detaching, resulting in minor injuries to seven children.

The CPSC's proposal will ban the sale of all drop-side cribs from the United States. It will require their removal from hotels, motels and day care centers. The new rules will also call for stronger mattress supports in cribs.

Ohio parents should stop using drop-side cribs immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free fix.
