New Ohio booster seat law in effect starting April 7

Cleveland drivers may now be ticketed if their child is not riding in a booster seat. The new state law requires drivers to restrain four to eight year old children who are less than 57 inches (4’9”) tall in a federally approved booster seat while they are riding in a motor vehicle.
 
The new law is designed to save lives. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children under eight. In the past five years, 76 children between the ages of four and eight were killed in Ohio car crashes. An additional 18,000 were injured. Many sustained serious injuries and were permanently disabled.

Child booster seats are designed for children over 40 pounds and under 57 inches. When used properly, they can save a child’s life. They protect the child by making sure that the adult seat belt is properly positioned. Without a booster seat, the lap portion of the adult seat belt can ride up and cause internal injuries to the liver and spleen.  
 
Booster seats reduce the incidence of serious injuries by 59 percent in children under eight. They are extremely effective in reducing car crash injury to the neck, abdomen, back, spine and legs.  
 
However, studies show that more than 60 percent of parents do not use booster seats. Perhaps the new law will encourage booster seat use. The fine for breaking the law is $75.
