Ohio truck driver sentenced for distracted driving crash death

The Ohio truck driver who was streaming pornography on his laptop computer when his 18-wheeler hit a disabled car on the New York State Thruway has been sentenced to three to nine years in prison for the wrongful death of the other driver.
 
The big rig accident occurred last December.  Thirty-three year old Julie Stratton was driving on the thruway about twenty miles east of Buffalo when she hit a deer. The accident disabled her car. She called her husband and 911 and remained seated in her car as she waited in the passing lane for emergency personnel to arrive.
 
As she was waiting, a large commercial truck smashed into the back of her vehicle. The mother of two died at the scene.
 
The truck driver, Thomas Wallace of Brook Park pleaded guilty in May to second-degree manslaughter.  Wallace had slept for less than four of the 27 hours before the crash. The 45-year-old trucker apologized to the victim's family at the sentencing.
 
When trucking companies pressure drivers to deliver goods on impossible schedules, the result is drowsy drivers trying hard to stay awake behind the wheel in order to keep their jobs.  While it is certain that the driver behaved irresponsibly, the trucking company may also be at fault in this case.
