Semi-truck crash kills 3 Marine recruits on the way to Cleveland

Charges are expected to be filed in a deadly crash that killed three Marine recruits earlier this week.

Three Trumbull County Marine recruits were on their way to Cleveland to take their military entrance exams when they were killed in a seven-car pile-up at the intersection of state routes 5 and 82 at Burnett Road in Warren Township. The accident took placed around 3pm on Wednesday, March 31.

The young men were in a 2008 Pontiac G6 that was being driven by Marine Sergeant Charles Keene. The crash occurred when a tractor-trailer big rig hit the car from behind as it was about to proceed through the intersection. The impact forced the Marine’s vehicle into the intersection where it spun around and was hit multiple times by other vehicles. A total of seven vehicles, including a motorcycle, were involved in the crash.

The semi truck was driven by Donald Williams of Youngstown. Investigators have ruled out mechanical failure as a cause of the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Marine Sergeant Keene and a fourth enlistee were hospitalized with injuries, but are in stable condition.
