Student killed in Akron drunk driving pedestrian crash

A young woman was struck in an Akron pedestrian-car accident has died. It greatly saddens me as an Ohio wrongful death attorney to hear about tragedies like this.

Amanda Rose Pappa, 21, of Bellaire, Ohio was run over by a suspected drunk driver near the intersection of Allyn Street and Irisdale Place. The fatal Akron accident occurred around 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2010.

After the accident, Pappa was rushed to Akron City Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m.
Pappas was hit by a 17-year-old male driver. He and a 15-year-old female passenger were taken to hospitals for injuries, but are expected to recover. The driver has been charged with felonious assault and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The investigation is ongoing.

The intersection is located near the University of Akron in a neighborhood populated largely by UA students. Akron police were witnesses to the car crash, because they were already in the area to break up a huge fight.

An officer spotted the Honda Civic approaching the area with no headlights. He flashed his own lights at, but the driver didn't respond, so the officer followed. He saw the car jump a curb, hit a short retaining wall, bounce into a parked cruiser and then hit Ms. Pappa, who was standing on the sidewalk.

Pappa was a nursing student at Belmont Technical College and was visiting Akron with a friend. She leaves behind parents and an older sister.
