Toyota to be fined $16.4 million for sticky gas pedals.

Posted on Apr 10, 2010

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced on Monday, April 5, 2010 that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will seek $16.4 millio, the largest civil penalty possible, against Toyota. Now the government is considering a second civil fine against the automaker.

Toyota is currently facing a $16.4 million fine for failing to notify the government promptly about defective gas pedals. In January, Toyota recalled 2.3 million U.S. vehicles for “stick”  gas pedals that were blamed for some incidents of sudden acceleration. An investigation by the NHTSA determined that Toyota knew of the defects at least 4 months before the recall.

The NHTSA said that if there was not a $16.4 million dollar cap on fines, Toyota could be fined $13.8 billion. This is because the federal penalty for failing to notify regulators of a safety defect is $6,000 a car.

Toyota has issued three separate recalls in 2010 for ill fitting floor mats, sticky pedals and software problems.  Each recall has been connected to sudden acceleration and accidents. The handling of each recall is being investigated by the NHTSA.

Toyota is currently facing at least 177 consumer and shareholder lawsuits and more than 57 individual lawsuits claiming personal injury or deaths caused by sudden acceleration events.

At leady fifty-one deaths and numerous injuries have been linked to car crashes caused by sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles.
