Tractor-trailer tire causes fatal Ohio Turnpike car crash

A Grove City man was killed on the Ohio Turnpike after a tire thrown from a passing 18-wheeler truck flew across the median and hit his windshield.

The accident occurred at 11:55 a.m. on Monday, June 21. Fifty-one year old Douglas Wise was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. His passenger, 24-year-old Stephanie Wise, suffered serious injuries. She was taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk.

Mr. Wise was driving a 2009 Dodge Caliber eastbound on the Ohio Turnpike within Berlin Township in Erie County. A trailer tire came off a vehicle in the westbound lane and was thrown over the concrete center median. The tire struck Wise’s windshield and entered the interior passenger compartment. The impact caused the car crash. There vehicle sustained heavy damage to the windshield, front hood, and interior occupant compartment.

The semi truck did not stop and local agencies are trying to locate the vehicle. The accident is under investigation.
