Woman critically injured in fiery crash with 18-wheeler

A woman was critically injured in a fiery car crash on Interstate 90 in Concord Township, Ohio.

Allegedly, the crash occurred on Friday, May 7 on I-90 westbound near the 199-mile marker at about 12:40 p.m. Kristina Lee Kolp was driving a 2002 Toyota Rav 4 and ran into the back of a white 2006 Peterbilt semi-truck tractor trailer, which was waiting to enter a one-lane construction zone near the Kirtland town line.

After the crash, the SUV caught on fire.

Kolp, who resides in Buffalo, New York, was taken by helicopter from the crash scene to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. She is in critical condition. Her 3-year-old daughter was rescued by another truck driver, 30-year-old William Powell of Portersville, Pennsylvania.

Powell removed the girl from her child safety seat and put out the fire with an extinguisher. The child suffered only minor injuries and was treated and then released from TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township. The driver of the Peterbilt was not injured.

There is no evidence of alcohol involved in the crash. The 18-wheeler was traveling at about 25 mph at the time of the accident. It appears that the crash was caused when Kolp did not stop. The 2002 Rav 4 is not part of the Toyota recalls.

Kolp was cited for failure to maintain assured cleared distance; however, the crash remains under investigation.
